After Haaland, can Real Madrid handle the Harry Kane threat? Ashley Westwood replies

Ashley Westwood has revealed how Real Madrid could handle Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane when the two teams face off in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on May 1. The Spanish giants put in a brilliant defensive display in the last match, where they kept Manchester City at bay. Erling Haaland is well out of goalscoring range.

After keeping out Manchester City goal-machine Erling Haaland, Afghanistan head coach Ashley Westwood believes Real Madrid can do the same with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane in their UEFA Champions League 2023-2024 semi-final against the German giants. Will do. Extending their unprecedented record in the competition, Real Madrid defeated City on penalties to reach the semi-finals, a match where they displayed some exceptional defensive displays. Now, the Carlo Ancelotti-managed side will have to deal with Bayern forward Kane, who has been in sensational form with 42 goals in all competitions this season.

In their first leg of the UCL quarter-finals, it was Antonio Rudiger who marked Haaland, keeping the Norwegian striker out of goal-scoring range. Whereas, in the second leg, the Spanish side’s experienced center back, Nacho Fernandes did much the same to Haaland, which proved to be a key factor in Real Madrid’s victory. Westwood believes Los Blancos do not need to make too many changes for the Bayern clash, where they can plan the same approach with in-form Harry Kane as they did against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

“I think it will be similar to the Manchester City game where you obviously have to, you know, marshal Rudiger, Haaland. Obviously, he also made changes to the Manchester City game by deploying the midfielders back into center defence, but he also has the physicality of Real Madrid’s central-defenders, (Eder) Militao, who can come back into that as well, and me. They seem to be the ones who are going to try for Harry Kane,” Westwood said in a conversation with Sony Sports.

“They are the ones who are going to try to ruin it with their physicality and their aggression. I think if you’re thinking about stopping Harry Kane, you know, the reason he’s such a good player is because he’s such a good player and finisher. You know, maybe you have to go a little bit old school and really harass him and be tough and prepared and Real Madrid defenders have definitely got that in the locker,” Westwood said.

Real Madrid in winning form

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are on an impressive winning streak as Real Madrid beat arch-rivals FC Barcelona 3-2 just two days into the City clash. The win also sealed the 2023-2024 La Liga title for Los Blancos, extending their unprecedented run of form this football calendar. With the likes of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Rodrigo Goes in some goal-scoring form, the 14-time UCL winners will look to retain the same talent against the Thomas Tuchel-managed Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid will travel to the Allianz Arena in Munich for the first leg of the semi-final on 1 May, where they will be hoping to come away with a good score line to make the most of their home advantage for the second leg. For the other semi-final, Borussia Dortmund will take on Paris Saint-Germain at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany on May 2.
