Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir hug for the second time after RCB vs KKR match

Before the match began, broadcaster Star Sports shared a never-before-seen interview of Gautam Gambhir, where he admitted that he always wants to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). On Friday, Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders fulfilled the India legend’s wish with a comfortable seven-wicket win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as RCB became the first team to lose a match at home in IPL 2024. However, the result didn’t change anything between Gambhir and Virat Kohli, who shared an internet-breaking moment during the match when they hugged each other for the second time on Friday.

Criticizing RCB’s attitude in a Star Sports interview, Gambhir took a dig at their trophy-less record in IPL history, saying, “The one team I always wanted to beat and maybe even in my dreams was RCB. “They were second. Are on. High-profile team, with a dynamic team, owner and team – Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers. Didn’t win anything, but still thought they won everything, and that kind of attitude, I can’t stand it.”

Hours after the video went viral on social media, Gambhir was all smiles as Virat Kohli scored his second consecutive half-century in IPL 2024 after Sunil Narine’s explosive 47 off 22 balls, followed by Venkatesh Iyer’s half-century off 29 balls. KKR chased down the target of 187 runs with 19 balls to spare, but it was all in vain. After registering nine consecutive wins by home teams in IPL 2024, RCB has become the first team to lose at home this season.

Despite KKR’s win and a brilliant innings from Narine, who won the Player of the Match award, the warm embrace between Kohli and Gambhir during RCB’s innings topped the highlight reel. The act showed that they had buried the ghosts of the nasty tussle between the two in Lucknow last season, which had created quite a stir in world cricket.

Talks continue between Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir after RCB-KKR match

If that wasn’t enough for fans, the two hugged for a second time right after the match was over. Kohli shook hands with KKR players and staff members, but when it came to Gambhir, he hugged his former Indian teammate.

Talking about the match, due to the brilliant comeback of KKR bowlers in the death overs, RCB could only score 186 runs for six wickets despite Kohli’s unbeaten inning of 83 runs in 59 balls. This was the second consecutive half-century for the former RCB skipper, who had scored 77 runs in the previous match against Punjab Kings at home. KKR had no worries after a fast start from Narine and Phil Salt in the powerplay. The duo swung the bat at will to thwart the RCB attack as KKR scored 85 runs in the first six overs. Venkatesh made the job easy with his explosive half-century as KKR extended their winning record in Bengaluru since 2015.

“Coming here, getting those two sessions of practice, we were in good shape from the last game. Coming in and hitting some balls, feeling comfortable inside. The way Russell came in and realized that the bowlers weren’t going to help much with the wicket. We were batting, and went to the slower ones, analyzing the conditions on the spot was pleasing to the eye,” KKR captain Shreyas Iyer said after the match.
