The incident happened in the fourth over of LSG’s batting when Rishabh Pant was seen having a long animated discussion with an on-field umpire.
Former Australia cricketer Adam Gilchrist was not impressed by Rishabh Pant’s altercation with the on-field umpire during the IPL 2024 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday. Gilchrist believed that umpires should have more control over the game rather than getting involved in unnecessary discussions during the match.

The incident occurred in the fourth over of Lucknow’s batting when Pant was seen having a long animated discussion with one of the on-field umpires. Ishant Sharma looked fuming after Delhi lost a review on a wide-ball review off Devdutt Padikkal.
There was initially confusion among the commentators, who failed to guess what the discussion was about, before Sunil Gavaskar said that Pant had probably not sought a review on the wide ball. However, replays showed the Delhi captain gesturing with the ‘T’ sign after the delivery.

Speaking to Cricbuzz after LSG’s innings, Gilchrist said that the conversation between Pant and the umpire, which was close to five minutes, should have been more simple and concise, where the on-field official was only required to inform the captain about the decision. Should have proceeded after. He further said that if any player takes the conversation further then umpires should be given the right to fine him.

“I saw another example tonight where umpires need to have better control of the game, and that’s in any format. They have to do a better job of moving things forward. There was controversy over whether Rishabh had reviewed it. Okay, there was a misunderstanding on the review call. But he stood there and kept talking about it for 3-4 minutes. I believe this is a very simple conversation. It doesn’t matter how much Rishabh is complaining or any other player is complaining, the umpires should just say, ‘It’s over’ and move on immediately. But if he continues to talk, he should be fined,” the Australian said.

Commentators Pommy Mbangwa and Deep Dasgupta later clarified that Pant was upset with Pant for not using the snickometer to check whether there was an outside edge when the ball passed Padikkal’s bat.

Later, Pant performed brilliantly with the bat, scoring 41 runs in 24 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes, which helped Delhi achieve the target of 168 runs with 11 balls remaining. This was Delhi’s second victory in IPL 2024.
