The short clip was shared by all users on X, leading to speculation that something bigger could be happening within the Mi camp. The video comes at a time when MI is in the midst of a bit of turmoil. Not having the best campaign, MI have lost three out of four matches in IPL 2024, with their only win coming against Delhi Capitals.

MI, which is badly surrounded by the controversy over Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, is also facing the brunt of the fans who are demanding to make Rohit the captain again. And with a video of the two coming out, the belief is that something has to give, including the possibility of Rohit getting the MI captaincy back in mid-season.

This is not the first time that Rohit and Akash have been seen together. Earlier, after MI’s defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad – the second under Hardik – the two were in the middle of an intense conversation in the MI dugout.

This Rohit-Hardik swap is a theory that has also been endorsed by many former cricketers. Former India and Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwari estimates that if MI’s fortunes do not change soon, it is very possible that Rohit may be given the captaincy again. Chennai Super Kings did something similar in 2022. Two days before CSK’s IPL opener, news broke that Ravindra Jadeja had been named captain in place of MS Dhoni, but after the team suffered five consecutive defeats, Dhoni was back in charge. It remains to be seen whether MI follows the same path, but the internal feeling is that this may not be the immediate plan.

How Hardik’s return to MI disappointed fans?

Hardik’s return to MI after spending two productive years at Gujarat Titans was confirmed in an all-cash trade in November last year. While fans welcomed the move, they did not accept MI appointing Hardik as captain and abruptly ending Rohit’s decade-long and famous captaincy tenure. MI had not won the IPL in three years, and the management believed that Hardik, who had led GT to consecutive IPL finals, would bring back MI’s glory days, but the fans did not agree with the idea.

The protest that started from the day Hardik was announced as captain continues till today. Hardik was jeered in Ahmedabad where MI started their season against GT, and even louder at the Wankhede Stadium in Hyderabad and Mumbai. The crowd’s hostility towards Hardik was so great that it required Sanjay Manjrekar’s intervention as he instructed the crowd to ‘behave’.

And yet it was not enough. As MI lost three matches on the bounce, tensions rose before the team dispersed for regrouping practice during the six-day break. And on the return, MI finally achieved a convincing 29-run win over the Capitals. The reproach has subsided, but it is still present. Whether it will reduce gradually or completely… no one knows. But one move that will surely replace boos with boos is the return of Rohit as captain.
