Selectors sweat over Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill, but both are likely to be ruled out of the T20 World Cup

With top-heavy batting and the certainty of Rishabh Pant, India are looking for a lower-order wicketkeeper batsman. Apart from this, Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to get place in place of Ravi Bishnoi.

It remains to be seen whether there is a change of heart when the entire selection committee meets with the captain and coach on Tuesday and whether they find a way to bring in either Gill or Samson

When the Ajit Agarkar-led senior selection committee gathers in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to pick India’s squad for the T20 World Cup in June, much of the discussion will focus on the inclusion of Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill. The Indian Express understands that Samson, who should be a sure candidate for the tour of America and the Caribbean, has not been assured of a place following the Indian team

management’s request for a wicketkeeper who can make a place in the lower order as per their Is nearby. A top-heavy batting order. This means that Dhruv Jurel and Jitesh Sharma are back in contention and KL Rahul is certain to be out. It remains to be seen whether there is a change of heart when the entire selection committee meets with the captain and coach on Tuesday and whether they find a way to bring in either Gill or Samson.

Agarkar, who returned to India after a holiday, met Indian captain Rohit Sharma on the sidelines of Mumbai Indians’ match against Delhi Capitals on Saturday. At the same time, Rohit will attend the selection meeting through video conference from Lucknow. It is understood that the Indian team management has already conveyed to the selection committee about their needs in the T20 World Cup and there will be no surprise inclusions like the last two editions in UAE and Australia.

But what is going to happen are some tough decisions that the selectors will be forced to take to balance the team. With Rishabh Pant being a definite candidate for one of the wicketkeeping slots, it was believed to be a toss-up between Samson and Rahul. Although Rahul has managed to score runs in this IPL, with Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli in the top three, India are not willing to give way to another top-order player. This appears to be the reason why Samson’s place is still under debate as the 29-year-old has batted at No. 3 for Rajasthan Royals.

Samson has scored 385 runs so far in this IPL at a strike rate of 161.09 and has emerged as a transformed T20 batsman. After hot and cold spells in the past, he has been more consistent in his batting and in a team that is devoid of power-hitters, Samson’s presence could benefit India in the middle order. Additionally, Samson can also provide India with favorable match-ups against spinners – he is one of the best batsmen of spin in T20s – and can be sent anywhere in the batting line-up.

Sanju Samson has been among the batsmen who have scored the most runs in the IPL this season.

But, with Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav likely to make the top 4, the team management is keen to hire specialists for the role. Interestingly, if this is indeed the XI, Kohli and Suryakumar will bat less than what they are currently doing in the IPL, where the former has opened the innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore and the latter for Mumbai Indians. Will come at number 3 for. ,

As for Gill, there is no guarantee that he will be able to make it to the 15-man squad. With Rohit and Kohli in the mix, India do not need any other similar players, meaning the opener may end up in the reserves. It is expected that Rinku Singh will be the additional batsman in the team.

However, with Nos. 5,6 and 7 being specialist roles in T20, where the emphasis is on finishers, India’s team management believes that players who are accustomed to this role will be best suited for the World Cup. Hence, Jitesh, who has been a part of India’s T20 set-up over the last 12 months, has come into the picture despite not making the headlines this IPL. Similarly, Jurel, who performed brilliantly with the Test team in the series against England, is also a part of the discussion.

Like Jitesh, Jurel has not been on fire in the IPL, but in his most recent outing he scored an unbeaten 52 under pressure. And it looked like there would be a two-horse race between Rahul and Samson on the eve of D-Day. A three-horse race became between Samson, Jurel and Jitesh. As for Pant, although his T20I figures are not impressive, he is expected to be their trump card in the middle-order, especially since he is also a left-handed batsman.

There is an abundance of all-round players

India want six bowling options and as much depth as possible in the batting order, so they are set to have at least three all-rounders in the 15. Hardik Pandya, whose form with bat and ball is still intact. One concern will retain its place because there are not a lot of options.

Similarly, Shivam Dubey is expected to score 15 runs especially as a power-hitter. With Chennai Super Kings not using him as a bowling option, there are apprehensions about considering him as an all-rounder, but considering that India is short of options when it comes to batsmen who can bowl a few overs, The shortcoming is that Dubey remains a simple player. Pandya’s bowling is also not instilling much confidence, so India can make do with both.

The spin department in bowling includes Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi. Although Yuzvendra Chahal has had another stellar performance in the IPL, India are not keen to go back to him, as he is not a reliable fielder either. The need to open up space for Dubey means India will take only three fast bowlers out of the 15, with the trio being Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.

It is understood that three of the 15, Gill, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel and Khaleel Ahmed, will join the team as traveling reserves.
