“Hernandez Discusses Real Madrid Return”

AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez has discussed the possibility of playing for Real Madrid again in the future, but has also stressed how focused he is on succeeding with the Rossoneri.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, the French defender spoke enthusiastically about his time at Milan and the people he works with, but was asked if his future lay elsewhere.

Hernandez played for Real Madrid as a youth player, joining them from Atlético Madrid. He signed for Milan from Real Madrid in 2019, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side are looking for a new left-back to replace Ferland Mendy.

Speaking about the situation, he said: “I have only words of gratitude for Madrid because of the strong commitment they made to me at that time. I’m a person who likes to look ahead and I focus all my thoughts on the present and the nearest future, but as a grateful person, I keep that great club in my heart.

He was also asked if he was originally angry at not being successful there: “Perhaps the ideal conditions did not exist at that time for me to demonstrate my ability and enthusiasm, but I reiterate my gratitude to them.”

On the idea of returning to the Spanish capital, he said: “I think more about the day-to-day, not so much about the future. I have very good friends at Real Madrid and have great memories of both the club and its fans, but now that I am a Milan player, I feel very good here and I don’t think about other things. I’m completely focused on what I have to do with this shirt every day.

“We never know what life is going to bring us, but I live for the moment, for emotions and professionalism. No one knows the future. There are still many games to play with Milan this season and I really only think about what I have to do on the field.

Focusing more on Milan, Hernandez agreed that he has found his home in northern Italy and is very happy in his surroundings.

“Without a doubt, sportingly and personally. I am feeling very good here. I am completely dedicated to this wonderful city that welcomed me from day one as if it was my lifelong home. Everything was easy from the first moment. “I’ve started a family, I feel loved and I’m very happy,” Hernandez said.

Asked if this is the best time of his career, the French defender said: “I think so. I am sure of this. It is true that a player never stops improving, but I feel that I am at the moment of ideal maturity. “Plus, I feel the confidence from the coaches and my teammates and it shows on the field.”

Stefano Pioli comes under almost constant criticism when Milan are nowhere close to winning the title, but Hernandez had only good things to say about the coach.

“Pioli is a person who is very close to the player and has supported me all the time. He has given me maximum confidence to exploit my qualities and I have tried to repay him with my work on the field of play. “I am very grateful to him personally and professionally as he has been a key person in improving my performance,” he said

Will have to play at centre-back

“The truth is that I have played as a winger all my life and this is the position in which I feel most comfortable. Nevertheless, since I arrived at Milan I have placed a lot of emphasis on improving my defensive side and this makes it a position in which I feel more comfortable than I might have initially expected. I have proven to myself that I can play at a good level in that area as well.”

Meeting with Paolo Maldini before the move

“To be honest, when I first saw a legend like him coming to talk to me, I was a little nervous. He was very clear from the first moment, he told me about the project, what he wanted from me and told me that with him I would be one of the best in the world, something that made it difficult for me not to hesitate in wanting it. There was reason enough. To go to Milan.”

Potentially choosing Bayer Leverkusen over Milan

My agent informs me when things are very specific and I knew that many teams had a strong interest in me at that time, but in the end the decision to come to Milan was the right one. Time has proved me right.”

Maldini’s trip to ibiza to see him

“It was very important. Milan showed complete interest from the first moment. It was the club with the most European Cup wins after Real Madrid and having someone like Maldini explain the project to me in the first person was important to my agents and me. This is an organization that has been doing great work over the years and laying very solid foundations which is translating into sporting successes. Milan returned to its rightful place. The decision to come to Milan was completely successful for me.”

Brahim Diaz’s performance in Madrid

“From the moment he arrived in Milan, we had a very good relationship on and off the field. We have had a lot of good times together and I am very happy with the way things are going. he deserves it. I know that he has worked very hard and that he has the level required to play for Real Madrid.

“Of course [we remain in touch], he’s a very good friend. Our friendship goes beyond the playing field and the truth is that I have been able to give him very little advice in the sporting aspect, because he is very clear about what he wants and how to get it. I am very happy with his success.”

What is difficult to defend against; Vinicius Junior, Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappé?

“Tough. All of them, because of their world-class quality, are almost impossible to stop when they’re having a good day.”

Ibrahimovic returns to Milan

“Ibra is a born leader. Even in those moments when he could not help us from the field, his mere presence in his locker room would not give anyone any rest even for a moment. He impresses you with his winning character. Now he has left the field, but he is still close to the team, he continues to help them understand what Milan is and what a great demand it is to wear this shirt.

Inter’s impressive season

“In this city you breathe football and everyone talks about football. It is almost mandatory to support one of the two big teams and of course it irritates the Milan fan more that the leader is your great rival. Still, I am a very ambitious person and if the champions were any other team other than Milan, it would also bother me.

How did losing to Inter in the Champions League semi-final compare to the World Cup final?

“I don’t like to compare grief. Those are definitely the two toughest moments of my career and I still remember them. However, I try to use these bitter memories as motivation to do the opposite next time.

Was it difficult not to reach the round of 16 of the Champions League?

“Definitely. Our journey to the Champions League last year was beautiful and I work every day to live those moments and play those games with so much impact. We want to at least be at the same level as the last edition. But unfortunately it could not happen this year. I think the team gave a great effort in the last game of the group stage. At least we are still alive in European competition, even if it is the Europa League. “
